Create Systems That Complement Goals

Goals will continue to remain as items in a list if there aren’t any systems that support in achieving them.

Some examples:

  • Getting up early every morning and taking on the most important tasks immediately
  • Going to the gym and working out an hour or two, following a specific weekly schedule and never stopping
  • Tucking your kid in bed every night at 9PM and reading to him/her a favorite story
  • Creating unit tests or functional automated tests and scheduling them to run after a code commit to check for application errors
  • Saying No to extra-curricular activities, unless they complement your current set of hopes
  • Committing to set aside a percentage of the monthly income to a savings or business account, a travel or educational plan, an insurance or emergency fund
  • Inviting the girlfriend/wife for an interesting weekend getaway every once in a while
